Chalk Illustration
project details
Client: Dominos Pizza
Project Frequency: Seasonal
Session duration: 1 - 4 hours
Budget: $450-$800
Introduction:
Sometimes businesses have chalkboards that can help lend a hand crafted touch to customer waiting spaces to help them feel good about being there, as well as advertise specials and promotions.
Problem:
Art is becoming an increasingly common element in store branding lately, both providing visual entertainment to customers who must physically wait for a product to be ready, as well as utilize valuable advertising real estate within the confines of the store's customer spaces. The problem is what to say.
solution:
Of course the manager is going to want their specials and promotions included somewhere in the design. Typically for seasonal illustrations, some festive border element would be paired with appropriately colored letters and font styles that fit with the mood.
Problem:
What to draw? Keeping things fresh is key. Customers come to expect something new after a while, and the job is to deliver.
solution:
It helps when sessions are tied to a holiday season. Whether that's spooky, thankful, festive or patriotic, it's easy to pull from common themes and motifs that will capture audiences on an emotional level. Throw in something related to the business, in this case some pizza, and you've got a well-rounded composition minus the electrical outlets. And even those can be disguised within the design or used in creative ways if applicable.
One note about compensation. At first this was just a way to blow off some steam and also put on a short live promotional show in a lobby of hungry waiting guests. This soon turned into requests from other businesses whose employees may have taken notice during a lunch break. So I had to structure some sort of a package to make this kind of service sustainable.
No, I don't get paid in pizza. But I do offer seasonal packages including big holidays and a certain number of monthly touch-ups (because for some reason children just cannot keep their hands to themselves). Add more sessions or touch-ups as needed, or just purchase a one-time mural package. It's up to you and what you think your business could best utilize in terms of promotional advertising.
