Joseph's Classic Market
project details
Client: Joseph's Classic Market
Completed: 2015
Project Duration: 8 months
Budget: $4500
Introduction:
When I first received the phone call about designing in-store print signage and digital menu boards for this family-owned and operated grocery store, I wasn't expecting to be met with such a charming and authentic atmosphere inside both of their Palm Beach County locations. Run by two brothers, the stores feature a sense of authentic Italian food markets, from red tile and wooden wine racks to homemade pizza and bread baked daily. Customers seemed happy, comfortable, and enthusiastic while browsing aisles, speaking with staff, and checking out.
Problem:
For such an authentic atmosphere, case signage and product labels seemed bland and uninviting, starkly contrasting the savory scents lingering through each department. Differentiating between items that were new, on sale, or special was a task in itself, and hiring an expensive firm to rebrand everything from flyers to icons was financially out of reach for this small business.
solution:
Icons, labels and case signage. It all comes down to the individual department and the specialities brought to the table by each expert behind the counter. This is where the icon development process began. What makes each department special? How is this company's deli department any different from a generic store? Every icon went through a phase of research, sketches, cleanup, and application. Departments were grouped into colors, assigned an icon, and paired with a wood and paper background graphic.
Problem:
After dialing into the small details, my vision for the project zoomed out to address larger areas of information graphics viewable by the customer from a distance. The company had recently purchased a digital menu package including hardware and setup equipment. But they still needed images to display at each order counter to list current menu items, feature weekly specials, and give something customers to watch while they wait in line.
solution:
Flyers and menu boards. The first step was to address the large print signage to be viewed from behind counters, across aisles, or mounted elsewhere. These posters would be scaled down as takeaway print flyers that customers could pick up to note upcoming specials, sales, or holiday promotions. The templates produced for these flyers were then formatted for digital display, and I converted each template into an easy-to-follow tutorial file for the in-house graphics team to update with new items whenever required.
Using high quality stock photos of food, cutting boards and ingredients went a long way towards rounding out this project with a refined cohesiveness. The department icons and case signage added a unique brand element to the overall atmosphere of authenticity, while the custom labels unified all products like a family.
